McBee council addresses water meter failures, plans cleanup of dilapidated houses

Councilman James Linton told the Town of McBee council on June 3 that the town has experienced problems with its aging water-meter system and is awaiting replacement meters from vendor Ferguson. "We have been having an issue with the old system, working with it for hours and it is not working," Linton said. He added that staff are reading meters by hand and that the town will not turn off residents’ water while the issue is resolved.
Linton also said the council is discussing removing dilapidated houses but is consulting lawyers to determine what legal steps are required before the town can take action. He said the town is planning a community clean-up day and invited residents to provide ideas and assistance.
During public comment, an audience member asked about tree debris left in a yard after trees were cut down; Linton responded that the town would investigate and that the contractor should have hauled the debris off, but the town first needs to establish property ownership.
At the start of the meeting Councilman Robbie Liles moved to approve minutes from the May 6, 2025 regular meeting; Charlie Sutton seconded and the motion carried with the council voting "all in favor." The meeting ended after Councilman James Linton moved to adjourn and Robbie Liles seconded; the council again voted "all in favor."
