Mayor Glenn Odom told the Town of McBee council on Feb. 4 that the town's water meters are outdated and that the current handheld meter-reading system is more than 20 years old and not operational.
"The current reading system, a Handheld, is over 20 years old and is not currently operational," Odom said. He said he and Sydney with Alligator discussed options and concluded the most cost-effective approach is to keep the existing meters and replace the internal reading equipment.
Odom said he has asked the engineer to prepare documentation as soon as possible and that the town qualifies for a 35% grant to help pay for the upgrades; he said staff have contacted Rural Development about the plan. The mayor framed the change as necessary because the handheld equipment cannot be made operational.
Separately, Odom said the town should advertise for a Utilities Clerk and recommended running a two-week job posting to fill the staffing gap in the Utilities Department.
No formal procurement vote or hiring authorization was recorded during the meeting. The council did not provide details on total upgrade cost or grant program name; those items were described in general terms during the mayor's update.
