Mayor Glenn Odom said Feb. 4 that the Town of McBee is waiting on one remaining contractor quote before it can provide package documents to Rural Development and allow the planned multi-purpose building to break ground.
"We should have it tomorrow to give to RD, then they can go ahead and break ground," Odom said, adding that the builder estimated the work should take about four months. He urged council members to meet before the next council session to decide what the town wants inside the facility.
Odom said the project includes an exercise room and noted the town has $175,000 worth of equipment earmarked for that space. He described coordination with local partners on project timing and layout and said officials are preparing architectural plans and an interior layout.
The mayor cautioned the council to coordinate spending with other projects. He said the town has a two-year window for certain playground funds and suggested delaying playground purchases until other projects are moving forward. No formal vote on the building project was recorded at the Feb. 4 meeting.
Next steps: the council expects the final contractor quote, submission to Rural Development and a follow-up meeting to determine interior features and a timeline for phasing work.
