Mayor Glenn Odom said the Town of McBee expects to break ground in February on a $2.5 million multipurpose building after one outstanding letter from Drigger’s Law Firm is received. “We should break ground on that building in February, and it will take 4–5 months to build,” Odom said.
The multipurpose project was described as the town’s largest current capital undertaking. Odom said the town purchased two police cars in the summer of 2023 and that about $100,000 related to that purchase should arrive in roughly 30 days. Town Clerk Kylee Watts completed paperwork for a separate $350,000 police building project, which Odom said is also moving forward.
Odom outlined plans for the old company store once the new grocery store is occupied: because the old site already contains a kitchen and walk-in cooler, the owner (identified in the meeting as Keith) intends to open a butcher shop there and have his daughters operate a breakfast-and-lunch buffet. Odom said an engineer is scheduled to visit the grocery project the day after the meeting and a builder will meet with town officials the following Monday to obtain a final license for a new 5,000-square-foot building.
The mayor also said he is compiling a list of exercise equipment for the new multipurpose building’s fitness area.
The council did not take formal votes on construction contracts or final budgets for the multipurpose building during the meeting; Odom said only that the legal letter remains outstanding and provided the construction timeline estimate as the next key milestone.
