Parent tells Greenwood 51 board her son’s 504 accommodations were not followed; asks for review

She said staff had told her son his behavior was “an embarrassment to his parents” and that administration did not believe in 504 plans, which she said undermined supports the plan is intended to provide.
“I want to make it clear that this is not about avoiding accountability for my child,” Rice said. “My son is not perfect. However, he deserves to be treated fairly, respectfully, and consistently like every other student, especially while receiving support under a documented 504 plan.”
Rice asked the board to ensure the concerns receive appropriate review and to take steps to improve accountability, communication and support for students receiving accommodations going forward. The board accepted her comments as board information, in keeping with the public-input policy the board read before public comment.
No formal response or corrective action was recorded on the transcript during the meeting; Rice’s request remains a public-comment item for board consideration at a later time.
The meeting packet and board procedures indicate that comments naming students or staff will be received as board information only, and may be referred to executive session if necessary, per the public-input statement read by board staff before Rice spoke.
