Council addresses traffic-safety options, parks delay and community events

At the Woodcliff Lake Borough Council meeting, members reviewed several community items including traffic-safety recommendations for the intersection of Woodcliffe Avenue and Weis, a delayed park opening, upcoming community events and administrative timelines for the borough's affordable-housing plan.
Councilman Stern said the borough met with the county engineer about moving the stop line at High View and Broadway and reported that a traffic signal at Woodcliffe Avenue and Weis would likely take "a minimum of five years" to implement under county scheduling. The council directed the borough engineer to design interim safety measures—options cited included concrete islands, driveway relocations, enhanced signage, and lighting enhancements—aimed for completion within a year or two.
Council members also discussed trying to obtain a reduced speed limit on the county roads (the county indicated it would consider 35 mph, down from 40) and noted that the county does not permit speed bumps on county roads. The borough will need to update or re-run traffic counts before the county will advance more significant remedies.
On parks and recreation, councilors said they are pursuing a rainy-day location for camp, plan an open house on April 26 for camp and pool memberships, and expect the park opening to be delayed but to occur before Memorial Day. The borough approved related finances and crews are coordinating the move of veterans' displays under careful handling.
Other community items announced included a DPW shredding event on March 22 (8 a.m.–11 a.m., up to six boxes per trip), a DMV mobile unit scheduled for April 8 at the community center (appointments recommended), and seniors programming such as a March 6 St. Patrick's luncheon. Councilman Ben Poock credited borough camera and security investments with assisting the "immediate apprehension of the suspects" after a theft and vehicle-theft incident at a Chest Ridge Road shopping center.
Councilmembers also noted an administrative timeline on affordable housing: a locally determined fair-share number (reported as 329) may be challenged by parties until the end of the week, and the borough must submit its affordable-housing plan by June 30.
The council closed the meeting after approving consent items and adjourned.
