Open Space committee flags access issues on Hamp Road, highlights tree-planting partners

Members of the West Amwell Township Open Space Committee on Jan. 13 discussed access and property-protection issues linked to the Hamp Road Project and outlined outreach and maintenance needs tied to preservation work.
The committee said Hunterdon County re-stoned and graded Hamp Road and removed a bridge in a recent project, and that the changes limit Open Space access. The committee reviewed a memorandum that recommends installing a gate to prohibit public use between 70 Hamp Road and Alexauken Creek Road; township officials were asked to address the gate recommendation.
The meeting also covered outreach and on-the-ground maintenance: members agreed to post photos on the township website to show active preservation work and requested inclusion of representatives from the agricultural and environmental committees alongside Open Space members. Brian Fitting was assigned to find remaining contacts for the web post.
Members discussed white fence repair along Music Mountain and shared contacts to obtain quotes. The committee additionally identified a need for a boom mower; Open Space volunteers offered to research procurement and clarify next steps with the township.
Committee members highlighted community partners and restoration work. "Lambertville Goes Wild," led by Marianne Borge, "secured 500 trees," Dan Longhi said, and the group is willing to walk properties in West Amwell to identify replanting opportunities. The committee also noted that consultant Carrie Sergent of Global Forest had been hired to prepare a tree-replanting report but was absent from the meeting.
The committee agreed to coordinate twice yearly meetings with the Environmental Committee and scheduled its next Open Space meeting for April 14, 2026, at 7 p.m.
