Hardeeville — The council opened its June 4 meeting by honoring World War II and Korean War veteran John W. Harper and taking photographs with a trophy and a proclamation the city presented at Memorial Day. The mayor invited attendees to visit the new memorial park next to the library.
Mr. John W. Harper, who received the surprise recognition, thanked council members for the honor and for organizing the ceremony. Council members and attendees applauded.
Council also recognized the 10th year of the Hardyville Youth Council and awarded scholarships to senior participants. City staff said four members were selected to receive $1,000 scholarships from the Hardyville Transformation Foundation; two recipients were present. Ed Murray, representing the Kuanas Club of Jasper County, told the council the club increased its planned award from one scholarship to two and is presenting two $2,000 scholarships; one of the Kuanas Club scholarships also went to Andrea Cruz.
Speakers included youth recipients Andrea Cruz and Joelle Osborne, Ed Murray representing the Kuanas Club, and council members who praised the youth council’s community service projects, including clothing drives and food giveaways that supported local residents experiencing homelessness.
What’s next: staff will ensure absent recipients receive their certificates and checks. The council encouraged public visits to the new memorial park.
