Principal: HIB incidents down, cellphone discipline up in first half of school year

Principal Dr. Courtney Carmichael presented the Student Safety and Discipline report covering July 1–Dec. 31, 2024 and told the board the district saw "a great reduction in major disruptive disciplinary incidents" compared with the prior year.
Carmichael said harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) incidents have decreased and noted zero fights this reporting period. She also highlighted an increase in cellphone-discipline reports, which she attributed to implementation of a first-level consequence in place of prior warnings. "Cell phone discipline reports actually increased. That is due to our first level of consequences. We used to give warnings," Carmichael said.
Carmichael described trainings provided for staff, students and families on violence prevention, drug awareness and suicide prevention, and credited the district wellness coordinator, counselor, SRO Lt. Ken Stapleton and social work interns for work on climate and prevention programming. The board approved the School Safety Data submission to the NJDOE as part of the administrative agenda (A1).
