The Rochelle Park Board of Education voted Jan. 28 to submit an equivalency application to the New Jersey Department of Education to satisfy the Instruction & Program portion of the NJQSAC monitoring review.
Superintendent Sue DeNobile said the district passed curriculum-map indicators (60% of the I&P category) but did not meet the portion tied to student achievement scores and chronic absenteeism, which accounts for the remaining 40%. "We passed in curriculum mapping," DeNobile said, "but we fell short on measures tied to achievement and absenteeism. We will file an equivalency waiver and work with families to address attendance." The board approved the waiver by roll call vote as listed on the agenda.
DeNobile said parents should expect increased communication about attendance and asked families to partner with the district to lower chronic absenteeism. She framed the waiver as a procedural step that would allow the district to move forward while targeting the underlying indicators. The district will return with any further administrative requirements from the NJDOE once the waiver process is complete.
The board did not adopt new punitive attendance sanctions at the meeting; DeNobile said letters to families are forthcoming and that the district will monitor progress. The waiver resolution was carried as part of the administrative agenda (A4).
