Woodland staff proposes moving memorial to front of municipal building, suggests donor bricks and lighting

Staff member Nick (speaker 4) presented a concept plan at the Woodland Township workshop on Sept. 25 to relocate the memorial from the building's side to the front and to add a brick paver walkway, donor‑etched bricks and lighting.
"I distributed the concept plan for revisiting the memorial, moving the memorial from the side of the building to the front, possibly creating a brick walkway with a hardwired light, and a brick paver," Nick said, showing pictures of a similar recently completed project. He said the plan could include donor bricks etched with names and that costs would vary depending on donated materials or labor.
Committee members discussed design options — including a four‑sided monument with the original plaque on the front and three engraved sides for additional names — and accessibility from the parking lot. A member raised concerns about providing access for people with disabilities and suggested tying the walkway into the existing sidewalk so visitors can reach the memorial from the handicap parking area. The group also discussed tree removal to improve visibility and a flagpole design that slides into itself to avoid past problems raising the flag.
Staff said they would collect vendor pricing and information about how other projects sold donor bricks and return with a formal proposal and cost estimate. Committee members suggested the project could be included in next year's capital budget or pursued incrementally if donations cover elements of the work.
