The Middleville Downtown Development Authority was informed on Aug. 5 that the Michigan Liquor Control Commission approved the village—s social district; the director said businesses will still need to apply for individual licenses and the DDA must agree on signage and a logo before implementation.
In the director—s report the board was told the social-district requirements have been met at the state level but that individual businesses must complete their own license applications. "The businesses still need to apply for their individual licenses and we also need to provide signage at specified areas and agree upon a final logo as well," the director said.
Board members debated logistics and cost: whether to supply single-use cups, provide stickers for businesses to apply to containers, or let businesses source their own branded containers. Questions included inventory challenges, storage for cups, and whether providing stickers would place additional financial burdens on businesses. The director noted that licensing fees for businesses are significant ("over $200") and that enforcement and education with local law enforcement will be needed to ensure only approved containers are used in the designated area.
Why this matters: the social district changes local rules about carrying and consuming alcohol in defined downtown spaces and requires coordination with businesses and law enforcement. The board did not finalize a logo or a distribution plan for cups/stickers at this meeting; staff recommended further committee discussion and that the promotions committee explore options for providing stickers to participating businesses.
