Council approves Shawn Nelson Foundation one-day youth camp; organizer previews eight-week follow-up

The council approved a community partnership application from the Shawn Nelson Foundation for a one-day youth camp and heard a presentation describing broader plans for an eight-week follow-up program.

Shawn Nelson said the camp emphasizes mentorship, structure and progression from flag football to tackle readiness. "Structure creates results," he said, outlining program elements including safety training, fundamentals, mental development and positive male role models. Nelson showed a short recap video from last year and described partnerships with local businesses and volunteers; he said uniforms and insurance are major expenses.

Mac Chuilli, identifying himself as "founder CEO of Traction Sports Performance," spoke in support of the camp and said he would help with warm-ups and training. Nelson told the council the one-day application before them was specifically for this year’s single-day event; he said the extended eight-week camp would follow as a separate application and that he has discussed the program with nearby municipalities (St. Gabriel and Baton Rouge).

The motion to approve the one-day camp application was made and seconded; the council recorded roll-call votes in favor and the motion passed.
