Bedminster: NJ American Water to inspect service lines; JCP&L to upgrade aging power infrastructure

Township officials told residents at the April 7 Bedminster Township Committee meeting that New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will begin door-to-door inspections later this month to identify potential lead or galvanized service lines, primarily targeting older homes in the township.
Officials said NJAW's subcontractor CDM Smith will conduct the inspections wearing co-branded high-visibility vests and carrying company ID. Inspectors will take exterior photos and, with resident permission, a brief interior inspection (typically 15 minutes) to determine the pipe material where the service enters the building. Residents who decline an interior inspection will be offered alternatives such as self-reporting.
Town officials said that if lead or galvanized piping is identified, replacements will be completed at no expense to the homeowner. The work is fully funded by NJAW and targeted for completion by 2031. The township will publish program details on its website and Facebook page as information becomes available.
Separately, the committee said Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) plans infrastructure work in the Hills Drive area, replacing old conduits and cables and adding new switchgear and reclosers to speed outage restoration. The committee said Bob Flynn has been named the permanent JCP&L liaison for Bedminster and that Senator Steinhard joined a coordination call with utilities and township officials.
Officials urged residents to watch for inspectors' identification and stressed that at no time will inspectors ask for money. The township asked that residents consult the municipal website for official updates and warned residents to be cautious about door-to-door interactions with anyone who cannot show proper company identification.
