Board approves administration actions, training and permit rules; motion to appoint reviewers fails

Millington Township Board approved bills, authorized staff to accept winter tax payments, approved training attendance and seminars, adopted an inspection form and amended cemetery and appeals ordinances; a motion to appoint three Board of Review members failed for lack of a second.
At its Nov. 18 meeting the Millington Township Board approved a series of routine administrative actions, training attendance and ordinance amendments and recorded one failed appointment motion.
The board voted to pay presented bills totaling $78,338.25 and accepted the treasurer’s report and fund balances through Oct. 31, 2024. On personnel and operations, the board unanimously authorized township office staff (Lorah, Jackie and Carrie) to accept winter tax payments for the 2024 tax season; Supervisor R. Loomis said he preferred that residents use an envelope and the drop box rather than handing payments to him.
The board approved attendance for any members who can attend a Michigan Townships Association (MTA) workshop at a cost of $150 per person and approved two people to attend an MTA tax seminar on Nov. 25 at $160 per person. The board also adopted the Millington Township Inspection Form for inspections and complaints.
On ordinance and rule updates, the board accepted amendments to the Cemetery Rules and Regulations and approved amendments to Section 19.02 (Appeals) after the Planning Commission reviewed them and the Tuscola County Planning Commission offered no additional recommendations.
A motion by Supervisor Loomis to appoint Nila Schmandt, Larry Jensen and Nathan Ptaszenski to the Board of Review received no second and therefore failed. Several residents raised concerns about the appointment process during public comment; the Supervisor said he would wait to appoint until both prospective appointees could attend a meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
