The Mt. Pleasant City School District Board on Oct. 21 reviewed and approved paperwork for an out-of-state, overnight field trip for students in the Chief Science Officer (CSO) program to Chicago, coordinated with the CSO International Conference.
The CSO advisor, a science teacher who introduced the trip, said Central Michigan University will cover expenses for the trip and that the only expected student expense is optional souvenirs. "CMU is actually going to be paying for everything; the only things that our students will have to worry about is any souvenir that they feel are of interest to them," the advisor said.
Why it matters: The trip combines museum visits, behind-the-scenes access and the opportunity for students to attend a national CSO conference with peers and to present action plans. The board typically hears and approves out-of-state and overnight trips under its policy oversight.
The board also heard plans for a Veterans Day assembly scheduled for Nov. 6 (assembly at 1:50 p.m.) and a community veterans run on Oct. 26 to raise funds for the Disabled American Veterans. A staff presenter described the event lineup, said the district is inviting community members and noted a Google RSVP form and seating logistics. The assembly will include an honor guard, student and teacher speakers, band and choir performances and a bagpiper, and the invited veteran speaker was listed in the packet as Medal of Honor recipient Jim McLem.
Next steps: The field trip paperwork was placed on the New Business agenda for formal approval and was approved later in the consent items. Staff will handle student permissions, emergency information and the RSVP/guest logistics for the Veterans Day assembly.
