Travis Sylvester, the county Prevention Coordinator, briefed commissioners on prevention programs and grant activity during the Sept. 16 meeting. Sylvester summarized material he presented at the National Prevention Convention and said the youth-athlete/coach/physician prevention program is underway; prevention-material bags that include gambling-prevention information will be distributed and the materials shared with the commission.
Sylvester said a prevention partnership grant with local hospitals has been approved and will begin shortly. He described training hurdles for the VOS (volunteer on-scene) program — specifically drug testing and TB testing requirements — and said those issues have been worked out so they can be included in VOS training and qualifying. Sylvester told commissioners the initial training rollout was a soft launch and that he expects 30 people to be trained by Thanksgiving. He asked for approval to issue a press release about the VOS/mental-health follow-up grant.
Why it matters: the VOS program and associated grant funding are intended to expand local capacity for mental-health follow up and prevention outreach in partnership with hospitals.
What happens next: staff will begin the approved grant project, continue VOS training and finalize press-release details if the commission approves the outreach request.
