Commission approves First Street trail climb license for Bay Trail Network

The Munising City Commission approved a license agreement with the Bay Trail Network to build a new First Street climb that will provide a gentler ascent for cyclists using the Gateway Loop and nearby downhill features.

Trail organizers presented the proposal and an associated license agreement required by the existing trail-network arrangement with the city. A consultant concept plan (Rock Solid) recommended the First Street climb as the best alignment after avoiding areas affected by a prior landslide; staff said contingency measures such as boardwalks would be included where necessary and that funding for construction is already in hand.

Commissioners questioned whether neighbors had been notified, whether construction would create drainage or basement flooding issues and whether noise or work-hour limits were addressed. Trail representatives said contractor hours would be limited in coordination with neighbors, that no complaints have been received on similar trails and that the project would include appropriate drainage and sustainable building techniques.

The commission approved the licensing agreement on a motion recorded by a commissioner; the trail group will update public maps and provide bi-weekly trail updates to keep residents informed.

Next steps: Trail organizers will finalize construction scheduling and provide outreach to First Street residents; staff will record and track the license agreement terms on file.
