Advisory board recommends pausing sex-education adoption while House Bill 6068 is active

A representative of the district’s sex-education (SE) Advisory Board asked the board to continue using the currently approved 'The Wonder Years' curriculum for grades 4–6 until pending state legislation is resolved. The advisory group voted by majority to recommend maintaining the current curriculum because presenters said changes could be imminent during the post-election 'lame-duck' legislative window.

The advisory representative said the state’s updated Michigan Department of Education curriculum work has been paused because of anticipated legislative changes and noted the board should avoid adopting materials that might require immediate revision. The representative also cited a publicly available draft of House Bill 6068 and offered to share a drive with the bill text and a comparison of the 2017 and 2021–24 editions of The Wonder Years.

Board members discussed what 'lame-duck' means and how rapidly legislation could move in that window; one board member requested the advisory’s drive materials be shared in the board folder and said she would review House Bill 6068 before making any adoption decisions. The advisory board's recommendation was framed as guidance, not a directive; no final board action to adopt or reject the updated curriculum was taken during the meeting.

The advisory board also referenced national sex-education standards and an updated edition of The Wonder Years (2021–24) that some districts are using; the advisory group recommended waiting to see if legislation changes the statutory requirements before the district adopts the newer edition.
