Commission backs Drug Court’s ‘Celebrating Families’ parenting program and seeks grant funding

Travis Sylvester and Sabrina Burke told the Big Horn County Commission they have completed training to deliver the Celebrating Families parenting program within the Drug Court population and that participants reported gaps in parent–child conversations about substance use.
Burke described a modular approach, breaking lessons into 15-minute segments by child age group, and said the program is well-suited to Drug Court participants. Sylvester requested adding $800 to the program expense budget to provide a meal and a children’s cohort component; the Commission approved the expenditure from savings by consensus.
Burke said she has submitted additional grants and that a state grant proposal is due Dec. 19; she said they hope to secure at least $200,000 from the program. Sylvester also provided an update on a hospital VOS follow-up partnership: North Big Horn Hospital has offered to forgo its reimbursement portion to allow funds to be used for training; registration for observer training stands at 13 confirmed and 11 pending, with a goal of 30 observers trained by spring.
The Commission approved the modest local budget change and noted staff will continue pursuing state grant funding and report back on grant outcomes and staffing progress.
