Student A suspended 130 school days after Negaunee Board discipline hearing

The Negaunee Public Schools Board of Education voted to suspend Student A for 130 school days, covering the remainder of the 2025–2026 school year, after a discipline hearing at the board’s special meeting Nov. 19, 2025. The suspension was made under NPS Board Policy 5200/5206A.

Principal Andrew Brunette reviewed the reported Nov. 7 handbook violation, which had been reported by Mr. Tweedale, the Negaunee High School assistant principal. Student A and Student A’s father acknowledged that Student A violated the school’s student conduct code. Board member Todd Saunders asked Student A for additional details about the incident; the minutes record that Student A and the parents declined to move the hearing into closed session and temporarily left the room at 10:12 a.m., returning at 10:30 a.m.

Following the discussion, Amy Clickner moved and Fae Collins seconded a motion to suspend Student A from Negaunee Public Schools for 130 school days for the remainder of the 2025–2026 school year. The motion passed on a 5–0 roll call vote, with two members absent. The minutes record the vote as “Yea: 5, Nay: 0, Absent: 2.”

After the vote Superintendent Andy Skewis and Principal Brunette briefly discussed alternative education options with Student A and the family and emphasized the district’s interest in Student A continuing to earn credit toward a diploma. The district did not list any specific alternative program by name in the minutes.
