The Negaunee Public Schools Board approved payment of June 2025 bills totaling $818,249.95 at its July 21 meeting and was told the district must return $1.6 million to Cliffs under a completed settlement.
Business Manager Michelle LaMere told the board that accruals had not yet been posted and the district is still awaiting state decisions on aid amounts for the year while preparing for an audit by Anderson-Tackman in August. The board briefly discussed uncertainties in the state budget and projected changes to Title funding.
Superintendent Andy Skewis reported, "the Cliffs settlement is complete, and the District will need to return $1.6M to Cliffs," and said no further appeals are expected. Skewis said the repayment will be reflected in July financial reports.
The board approved the June payments by a 6-0 vote. The administration said it will present July financials showing the settlement effect and continue coordination with auditors and state contacts about final aid figures.
