Saddle River proclaims Arbor Day, names arborist to pursue Tree City designation

The Borough of Saddle River presented an Arbor Day 2026 proclamation during the April 20 council meeting and announced steps to strengthen the town’s tree management program.
Mayor Albert J. Kerus read the proclamation declaring April 24, 2026 as Arbor Day in Saddle River and presented the document to Bob Laviano, chairman of the Environmental Commission. Laviano credited longtime resident Ron Yates with starting earlier tree efforts and said the commission had hired certified arborist Liz Stewart to identify and manage high‑value trees and guide the borough toward Tree City recognition.
Laviano said hiring a certified arborist will allow the borough to identify trees that should be retained or removed and to create a long‑term stewardship plan. The mayor and commissioners emphasized trees' environmental benefits, including air‑quality improvement, water conservation and erosion control, and said the work supports the borough's broader goal of environmental stewardship.
The council encouraged residents and volunteers to participate in the upcoming NJ250 Saddle River celebration and in tree‑care activities tied to the Arbor Day work.
