New Lothrop board approves hires, awards $56,150 parking-lot bid and accepts donations

Personnel and coaching approvals: the board unanimously approved the hire of Kourtney Bishop as an elementary playground aide effective Sept. 19, 2024; the appointment of Justin Agnew as junior-high basketball coach (listed in the minutes as a contracted employee of PCMI) for the 2024–25 season; and Jeff Campbell as junior-high wrestling coach for 2024–25. The board also approved a transfer of Gail Sigmund to a 6.5-hour food-service position, effective Oct. 14, 2024, and approved Winter Schedule C appointments for the 2024–25 school year. All motions carried, 6-0.
Budget and finance: Jim Eustace presented bills totaling $1,025,470.14 (General Fund $967,929.47; School Service $57,540.67). The board voted 6-0 to approve payment of bills. The monthly financial report showed a beginning balance of $2,473,780.90, receipts of $63,720.56, expenditures of $1,025,470.14, and an ending balance of $1,512,031.32; the board accepted that report 6-0.
Capital project and donations: the board awarded the Baseball/Softball overflow parking-lot bid to Gross Construction, Inc. for $56,150 to be paid from capital-projects funds and approved two donations: a granite bench from the Greg Bullard family to be placed by the football field and a flag pole donated by VFW Post 6559 to be placed by the baseball field. Those motions carried unanimously.
Other approvals and updates: the board approved potential athletic team overnight trips during the 2024–25 school year as presented (locations and dates were not specified in the minutes). In program updates, Elementary presenter Kim Kuchar said she proposed a book-vending machine to the PTO with an estimated cost of $7,000 and hopes to have it for March Is Reading Month. High School presenter Drew Severn reported on intervention work (EWIMS/SWIMMS) and noted a $635 donation from 3M to the Lego League; Parent-Teacher Conferences and a College and Career Fair were scheduled for Oct. 24. Closed session and next steps: the board voted 6-0 to enter a closed session under Section 8(1)(e) of the Open Meetings Act for pending litigation (Case #AAA01-24-0006-1692) and under Section 13(1)(g) of the Freedom of Information Act to consider attorney-client privileged correspondence. The minutes record no outcome from that closed session. The meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m.; the board’s next regular meeting is set for Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the high school library.
