Rutgers board approves new degree programs, policy update and multiple professorships

Key approvals included amendments to University Policy 10.2.8 (renamed “Maximum and Minimum Course Loads”) to clarify the definition of course load and the responsible offices; establishment of a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the School of Arts and Sciences–Newark; and establishment of a Master of Science in Sustainability and Health at the School of Public Health. The minutes state both degree proposals were reviewed by external consultants and that resources to launch the programs were in place. The Board’s action directs notification to the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education where required.
The Board also approved the creation of the Joanna Burger Endowed Legacy Professorship, supported by a pledge of $520,000 from Joanna Burger, Ph.D., and Michael Gochfeld, M.D., Ph.D., to support research in behavioral ecology, and endorsed multiple faculty appointments to endowed chairs and professorships effective July 1, 2025 (including Wanda J. Blanchett named University Professor, John Keene named Board of Governors Professor of English, Kenneth G. Miller named Board of Governors Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Nancy Yunhwa Rao named Board of Governors Professor of Music, Norman Rasmus Swanson appointed to the James Cullen Chair in Economics, and Ann O’Connell appointed to the Charles A. DeMarzo and Keith N. Lamb Endowed Chair in Educational Equity).
Per the minutes, the Committee’s executive session considered personnel matters including academic appointments with tenure; those recommendations were placed on the Consent Agenda and approved in open session.
