Residents ask Rutherford council to rescind narrow block parking ban after tickets to elderly neighbors
Summary
Neighbors told the council that a decades-old parking restriction (10–12) on a block of Montro Avenue is sporadically enforced and burdens older residents, urging either repeal or a residential permit; council members said they will review the ordinance and follow up.

Rutherford — Two residents urged the council on May 27 to reconsider a long-standing parking restriction that bars parking between 10 a.m. and noon on a stretch of Montro Avenue, saying recent enforcement produced tickets for local seniors and creates hardship for older homeowners and caregivers.
Carlos Nadars, who said he lives on Montro Avenue, described the restriction as originating about 30 years ago to address commuter parking for a nearby bus stop. He said enforcement had been sporadic but recently resumed, producing tickets for neighborhood residents, including his wife and daughter after church: “the ordinance is a big issue… I need a knee replacement… every once in a while I need to stay home… I have to get up and move the car.” He asked the council to “rescind the ordinance or give us some type of parking permit so the residents that live in the one block can park.”
Mayor Niato thanked the residents and said he would convene the borough administrator and the police chief to pull the ordinance, understand its original purpose, and review options with council colleagues before returning with findings. The mayor asked for email addresses so staff could follow up with the residents.
Why it matters: The restriction affects only a single block and, according to commenters, produces practical difficulties for aging residents, visitors to local institutions (synagogue) and caregivers who deliver in-home services.
What’s next: Council members (the mayor said) will review the ordinance text and enforcement practices and follow up with the residents; no timetable or specific remedy was set at the meeting.
