New Lothrop board hears student recognitions, athletics honors and facilities update

The New Lothrop Board of Education received several district updates and recognitions at its Dec. 16 meeting.
Elementary teacher Kim Kuchar recognized the Kindness Squad and named Harper O’Reilly, Bradley Wenzlick and Malia Unangst for recent acts of kindness. High school representative Drew Severn recognized December 'Hornet of the Month' students: Gavin Gauger, Julia Dumond, Riley Neubecker, Makenna Gemalsky, Timothy Schmier and Dalton Birchmeier.
On athletics, Mr. Severn reported for Marty Weese that the varsity football team was named a Division 7 Academic All‑State team. Individual honors included Academic All‑State selections for Kaven Unangst and Dalton Birchmeier, an All‑Region selection for Ethan Wesener, and day‑specific wrestling MVPs for Hunter Wolfe and Dalton Birchmeier. Upcoming events noted in the minutes include a Hall of Fame Wrestling Tournament (Jan. 10–11), MHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament (Feb. 8) and boys basketball district dates (Feb. 24, 26, 28).
Facility work was reported by Wayne Wright: ground was broken and dirt removal completed for the baseball/softball parking lots and the FFA barn; pole installation is expected in January. Wright also noted a district effort to inspect drinking fountains in advance of a planned 'Filter First' cleaning in June 2026. The district announced a holiday staff luncheon the week before break.
