The New Lothrop Board of Education on July 15 unanimously approved a package of fiscal and personnel actions, including multiple millage levies, appointments, and an $80,834.88 curriculum purchase.
The board, meeting in the high school library, voted 5-0 to approve levies for the 2024–2025 year: 6.2700 mills for the 2006 debt retirement; 1.2370 mills for the sinking fund; 0.7600 mills for the 2019 bond; 0.5500 mills for the 2021 bond; and 0.9100 mills for the 2021 refunding bonds. The board also approved an 18-mill non-homestead levy for the general fund for 2024–2025.
Why it matters: the levies provide revenue for debt service and district operations in the coming fiscal year, and the board recorded the district's monthly financial position: a beginning balance of $2,406,747.09; receipts of $1,384,570.32; expenditures of $1,421,179.49; and an ending balance of $2,370,137.92. Bills presented for payment totaled $1,421,179.49.
The board designated Fifth Third Bank (Michigan Liquid Assets Funds) and Huntington National Bank as official depositories and authorized board officers, the superintendent and the director of finance as signatures on district accounts. The board also placed Thrun Law Firm on retainer for the 2024–2025 school year.
On personnel matters the board approved the resignations of Shelly Indlekofer (one-on-one aide, effective June 21, 2024) and Ben Butcher (high school science teacher, effective July 1, 2024). It approved hires and transfers including Samantha OReilly as payroll/accounting coordinator (effective July 11, 2024); a transfer of Kaylee Kozel to elementary certified teacher aide (effective Aug. 22, 2024); and hires of Kendra Gross and Jackie Carnell as certified one-on-one aides (effective Aug. 22, 2024) with reimbursement noted from the SRESD/State Aid (Special Education).
The board approved the contract for Wayne Wright as superintendent for July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025.
Curriculum and programs: the board approved a quote from Amplify for a PK–5 Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum in an amount not to exceed $80,834.88 to be paid out of the 35j Literacy PD, Curriculum and Support grant over a two-year period.
Other routine approvals included Fall Schedule C coaching appointments and overnight athletic camps (Girls Basketball camp July 16–18 at Northwood University, Midland; Girls Volleyball camp July 18–19 at Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant), the State Aid Operating Notes Resolution, and the police agreement for the 2024–2025 school year. All motions recorded in the minutes carried 5-0.
The board completed a first reading of Title IX Special 2024 Policies 2264 and 2266; the first reading was approved and the policies will appear on a future agenda for final action. The meeting adjourned at 6:32 p.m.; a board workshop is scheduled for Aug. 19, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.
