On Sept. 22 the Rutherford Mayor and Council approved an ordinance amendment on first reading to add "event space" to Chapter 131 of the borough zoning code and authorized advertising the ordinance according to law.
Council President McGawan moved to pass the ordinance on first reading; the motion was seconded and approved in a roll-call vote with Council President McGawan, Councilman Del Cohen, Councilman Kley and Councilman Guzman recorded as voting yes.
During committee reports the council and borough staff recapped Rutherford Day, thanking volunteers and sponsors and noting the ribbon-cutting for new exercise equipment at Memorial Field and the arrival of a new fire truck for Engine/Rescue 5. Borough Administrator Bob told the council the event was staffed largely by borough employees and estimated attendance "about 10,000 people." Several staff and volunteers (Kim Begoian, Connor Fox, Janice Guzman) were singled out for coordination work.
Personnel and consent items: The council accepted the resignation of Nicholas Mazakaro from the fire department (10 years of service) and approved the appointment of Sandra Genta as a traffic guard effective Sept. 23, 2025, in accordance with rules of the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Both items were included in the consent agenda and approved by roll call.
What this means: The ordinance cleared first reading and will be advertised; further readings or public hearings will be required for final adoption. Personnel changes were processed through the consent agenda with council approval.
