NCRA, AYSO and city discuss repairs and security after vehicle damage to soccer fields

Representatives of AYSO told the Newaygo Community Recreation Authority that a vehicle damaged the soccer fields and asked for help making the fields safe for players.
Herwig, identified in the minutes as AYSO treasurer, said the group wants to work with the city and NCRA to protect players and fields. Jon Schneider said the city had experienced similar incidents at the Riverfront Parks, the skate park and Centerline baseball fields and that the Newaygo Police Department had been made aware.
Board members and AYSO discussed potential measures to reduce vandalism and vehicle access, including installing cameras, posting surveillance signage, adding rocks or bollards, fencing portions of the field, and improving lighting. AYSO said it will approach potential sponsors about funding rocks and light poles. Schneider said the Department of Public Works would deliver topsoil to the soccer fields and blade the soccer parking lot.
Schneider also reported that Double L Irrigation would replace several valves at the soccer fields; he said the irrigation well had been turned off and subsequently restored, and Double L attended to ensure the system was functioning properly. Other maintenance updates noted at the meeting included the Pickleball Club obtaining quotes to repair cracks at the Henning Pickleball Courts, Nick Smith27s update that disc-golf signs were being ordered before decisions on tee pads and a kiosk, and Duane duChemin27s report that the South dugouts at Centerline were complete with plans to begin work on the North dugouts soon.
The board recorded these maintenance items and discussed next steps for security and repairs during the July 11 meeting.
