TIFA increases Social Zone Expansion funding after bids come in over budget

The Newaygo Tax Increment Finance Authority on July 19 approved increasing TIFA’s funding commitment for the Social Zone Expansion Project from $40,000 to $95,000 after bids for the work exceeded projected costs.
City Manager and TIFA Director Jon Schneider told the board the original $40,000 allocation was outpaced by the bids received and that the bids did not include necessary concrete work near Northwood General Store at 34 State Road, which Schneider recommended adding to the project. Schneider noted that bids for the approved water service line and water main projects came in lower than budgeted, offsetting part of the increased request.
Ed Fedell moved to increase the funding and John Buckley Jr. seconded; the board carried the motion on a roll-call vote with ten members voting in favor and two absent. Schneider said a bid tab was included in the packet and that the TIFA would pursue quotes and, if applicable, seek cost contributions from other municipalities participating in the NCRA for preventative measures discussed later in the meeting.
The minutes record a plan to obtain quotes for additional concrete and for Schneider to return to a future meeting if funds could not be secured through other sources. No specific contractor, timelines, or final contract awards were recorded in the minutes.
