New Lothrop students earn FFA and robotics honors; district to seek LED lighting bid and will start pre–Labor Day

The New Lothrop Board of Education on March 17 heard reports highlighting student achievements and district plans for facilities and the school calendar.
Kim Kuchar recognized elementary Students of the Month for acts of respect. High school representative Drew Severn reported strong results at recent FFA state competitions — including multiple state winners, proficiency awards and seven State FFA degrees — and said an FFA labor auction raised $34,000. Severn also reported that the New Lothrop Stingers robotics team finished third at the Wayne State First Robotics Competition and won the Industrial Design Award.
Athletic director Marty Weese outlined regional and state placings for several athletes and listed upcoming tournament dates for varsity sports. Wayne Wright, reporting for the district, said the district will issue a bid to convert elementary fluorescent lighting to LED and noted that the FFA barn project is progressing. Wright also said the state approved New Lothrop's request for a pre–Labor Day school-year start for the next three years for Shiawassee County and that the April 21 board meeting will be held in the high school auditorium because of testing schedules.
Student activities and staff training were also noted: March professional development included data analysis and M-STEP proctor training; the PSAT/SAT testing window begins April 9. The board did not take formal action on these programmatic items; the reports were informational and were followed by routine motions to adjourn.
