Board hears student recognitions and reports rising reading scores, schedules events

The board recognized elementary and high-school students of the month, heard that i-Ready and Acadience reading measures improved from fall to winter, and learned about upcoming school events including a preschool art show, Family Literacy Night and multiple FFA activities.
At the Feb. 10 meeting of the New Lothrop Board of Education, administrators recognized students and reported academic and extracurricular updates across the district.
Kim Kuchar highlighted elementary 'Students of the Month' for participation and said i-Ready reading results for 2024–25 show an increase in the percentage of students reading at or above grade level from fall to winter across all elementary grades. Acadience testing reported increases for six or seven grade levels. Kuchar described the district’s Daily Reading Intervention (DRI), where three instructional aides pull small groups for 20 minutes daily for intensive reading support.
Kuchar said a Book Vending Machine, donated by NLES PTO and local businesses, will be placed outside the elementary library in approximately two to three weeks; the vending machine design was created by student Kelsey Kohlmann, Class of 2026. She also summarized kindergarten 'farm' activities that brought animals to campus and reported that kindergarten classes collected more than 750 personal care items for local distribution. The preschool art show is scheduled for Feb. 20 from 5:30–7:30 p.m., and Family Literacy Night coincides with the Book Fair on Feb. 26.
High school representative Drew Severn reported upcoming parent-teacher conferences on Feb. 13, a data review on Feb. 11 and state assessments beginning April 9. Severn listed upcoming events including a drama performance on Feb. 22, an NHS blood drive on March 5, FFA regionals and state convention dates, FFA Labor Auction on March 12, Mock Rock on March 21 and NHS induction on March 26.
The athletics report noted several honors — including Ashlyn Orr being named an MHSAA Class C finalist — and listed wrestling and basketball district schedules and regional bowling dates. Wayne Wright said building materials for the FFA barn were delivered and construction is expected to start soon. The next board workshop is Feb. 12, 2025.
The meeting included routine governance business and adjourned after a closed session; no academic policy changes were adopted at this meeting.
