Board approves hires, transfers, resignations and leaves; approves professional development

At the Oct. 15 meeting the Board of Education for the Salem County Special Services School District and the Salem County Vocational Technical Schools approved multiple personnel actions recommended by the superintendent.
The board approved hiring Nicole Mitchell as an adult education instructor at $32 per hour, effective Oct. 1, 2024; Rachel Rivera as a Paraprofessional 1:1 at the Cumberland Campus at a salary of $22,650 (effective Oct. 16, 2024); and Gaye Pieters as a speech-language pathologist for the Early Intervention Program at $77 per hour (effective Oct. 1, 2024). The board also approved a work-based learning stipend for Michelle Brown and approved the list of staff funded through the 21st CCLC grant as presented.
The agenda recorded transfers in staff assignments, and the board accepted resignations effective as stated in the agenda: Kassondra Moore (Cumberland Paraprofessional), effective Nov. 1, 2024; Carlie Rieck (Cumberland Paraprofessional), effective Oct. 18, 2024; and SaraAnn Whitzell (EIP), effective Oct. 15, 2024. The Superintendent requested and the board approved FMLA/NJFLA leaves including an FMLA leave for Brenda Karstetter (on or about Sept. 3 to Nov. 4, 2024) and a NJFLA leave for Matthew DiTizio (on or about Nov. 1 to Nov. 29, 2024), and separate leave approvals for Alicia Walton (starting on or about Jan. 31, 2025) and Shannon Leady (on or about Oct. 2 to Nov. 27, 2024).
The board also approved multiple professional-development workshops and training for both SCVTS and SCSSSD staff, including a Lincoln Electric submerged arc welding instructor training funded by an NJEDA grant ($3,299.21) and Culinary Institute of America travel and lodging costs itemized at $1,159.54, among other listed workshops. Reimbursement amounts for travel are subject to GSA guidelines as noted in the agenda.
The meeting included the swearing-in of the student board member, Joshlyn Marshall, who recited the oath of office as presented in the minutes.
Most personnel and professional-development items were approved by roll-call vote as recorded in the meeting minutes; effective dates and salary/hourly rates are listed in the board agenda.
