Rutgers boards unanimously appoint Dr. William F. Tate IV as 22nd president, effective July 1

Amy Towers, chair of the Rutgers Board of Governors, announced that the Board of Governors has elected Dr. William F. Tate IV as the 22nd President of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, with the appointment effective July 1, 2025.
Towers said the university engaged executive search firm WittKieffer and convened a 20-member Presidential Search Committee that conducted listening sessions, maintained a public website and email for input, and interviewed a final slate of candidates before recommending Dr. Tate. "The process was extensive and inclusive," Towers said, and the Board selected Dr. Tate after several interviews.
Mr. Lal read the Board of Governors' resolution naming Dr. Tate and moved its adoption. The resolution states in part, "NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Dr. William F. Tate IV is hereby elected the 22nd President of the Corporation (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) and of the University," language read into the record by Mr. Lal. The resolution also appoints Dr. Tate as a University Professor and Distinguished Professor with academic tenure and notes that his appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees and to the terms of a signed appointment letter dated May 14, 2025.
The Board of Governors seconded the motion and unanimously approved the appointment. After the Boards moved into closed session earlier to discuss personnel matters, they resumed open session at about 11:00 a.m. for the public votes.
Ms. Amy Mansue, chair of the Board of Trustees, asked the trustees to consider a companion resolution consenting to the Governors' appointment. Mr. Kenneth Johnson, vice chair of the Board of Trustees, read and moved the trustees' consent resolution; the motion was seconded and the Board of Trustees unanimously approved consent to Dr. Tate's appointment.
Dr. Tate is currently president of Louisiana State University and previously served as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. The Governors' resolution summarizes his academic credentials and honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the National Academy of Education. The resolution charges Dr. Tate to lead Rutgers' academic, research and service missions across its multiple campuses.
The special joint meeting concluded with the formal approvals and adjourned at approximately 11:30 a.m. Dr. Tate's appointment is effective July 1, 2025, and the Board of Governors' resolution notes his appointment is "indefinitely at the pleasure of the Board of Governors" subject to the terms of his signed appointment letter dated May 14, 2025.
