Deans outline plan to merge Rutgers’ two medical schools into single Rutgers School of Medicine

Deans Robert Johnson (New Jersey Medical School) and Amy Murtha (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School) updated the Board on Oct. 17 about an ongoing plan to integrate the two medical schools into a single Rutgers School of Medicine.
Johnson said the integration will yield one medical school with one dean, two campuses, one set of bylaws and one admissions process; Murtha said leadership established guiding principles and that adherence to those principles has helped alleviate opposition to the change. The Deans told the Board that the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation process is underway and is expected to be completed by June 2027. The charter class for the unified school is planned to enter in summer 2028 and graduate in 2032; students who began medical study at Rutgers this year will be part of that first graduating class.
Murtha described the admissions process development, and Johnson summarized curricular components and stakeholder engagement. The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) assisted in drafting bylaws that are under review, and the Deans said task forces and committees have sought input from more than 400 faculty, staff and learners. Deans Johnson and Murtha answered questions from Board members during and after the presentation.
