Newaygo business owner raises concern over tenant parking enforcement on Wood Street

Donna Friar, the owner of 47 N. State Rd., addressed the Newaygo City Council during public comment on July 8 to raise a parking dispute involving tenant vehicles parked on Wood Street.
Friar said her building contains four residential units with four vehicles that have been parking next to her building on Wood Street; she said she was recently told tenants could no longer park there and must use tenant parking in the larger lot behind the businesses. Mayor Ed Fedell and Police Chief Andres explained that the Wood Street spaces are posted "customer parking only," that adjacent buildings had been vacant for several years (which previously allowed flexibility), and that once the adjacent spaces were occupied the city began enforcing the posted restriction. Chief Andres told Friar that tickets would be issued if tenant vehicles continued to park on Wood Street and asked Friar to come to city offices to discuss parking options with her and the Code Enforcement Officer.
Schneider and Schneider's staff record indicates that a 2020 Zoning Compliance Permit for 47 N. State Rd. specified tenant parking in the large lot, supporting the city's position that tenant parking should be in the designated lot rather than on Wood Street.
