Northport Board approves handbooks, course catalog, hires and bills; superintendent flags enrollment challenge

The Northport Board of Education approved several routine administrative items and heard an operational report from Superintendent Neil Wetherbee at its Aug. 11, 2025 meeting.
By consent the board approved the consent agenda, which included the July 14, 2025 regular meeting minutes, bills presented for payment totaling $289,518.91, and two hires: Tracy Denoyer as a kindergarten teacher and Eric Wynn as a secondary English teacher.
In action votes, the board approved updated teacher, coach, elementary student and secondary student handbooks in a motion moved by Ryan Blessing and supported by Danielle Percy (vote 5–0). The updated course catalog was also approved in a motion moved by Tom Wetherbee and supported by Daniel Duffiney (vote 5–0); the board asked for a correction to the date on the front cover to read 2025–26.
Superintendent’s report: Wetherbee said the district is fully staffed pending board approval of new hires, outlined summer projects that included cleaning and small facility improvements, server upgrades, installation of new gym clocks, and purchase of a compressor for the walk-in freezer and refrigerator. He noted staff return dates and upcoming events: All Staff Workday on Monday, Aug. 25; Back to School Picnic on Aug. 27; first day of school on Sept. 2. Wetherbee told the board that, while academic and facilities goals have been met, increasing student enrollment remains a challenge and the district is exploring specialized educational marketing services to better showcase district strengths.
The board also heard community input on communication about openings and parent collaboration; Kali Dignan said she is stepping down as PTO vice-president and urged improved school–PTO collaboration, and Eric Potes noted a recent loss of some fifth-grade students that affected middle-school sports participation. The board’s next regular meeting is Sept. 8, 2025.
