The NICE Community School District Board of Education met in special session Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Westwood High School and voted to recommend that a student serve a 45-day suspension.
Board President Crystal LaFreniere called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m. Members present were Jim Gray, Chad Korpi, Crystal LaFreniere, Derrick Magnuson and Scott Mann; Kathleen Carlson and John Grove were absent. Administrators Bryan DeAugustine and Cliff Fossitt were recorded as present.
There was no public comment on the agenda. The board approved the agenda on a motion by board member Scott Mann, supported by Chad Korpi.
Mann moved, with Korpi supporting, that the board enter a closed session “under Section 8(b) of the Open Meetings Act.” The board entered closed session at 5:03 p.m. and returned to open session at 5:15 p.m., according to the minutes.
After resuming the open meeting, Mann again moved, supported by Korpi, to recommend a 45-day suspension for the student. A roll-call vote recorded Jim Gray, Chad Korpi, Crystal LaFreniere, Derrick Magnuson and Scott Mann as voting “aye,” and the motion carried.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn by Mann, supported by Korpi; the meeting adjourned at 5:18 p.m.
The student subject to the disciplinary recommendation is not named in the minutes. The record in the minutes provides the board action and timing but does not include details of the allegations, the student’s identity, or any procedural findings reached during the closed session.
