Council approves DPW roof repair; local roofer offers to fix fire station roof at no charge

The City of Olivet Council on July 8 authorized a repair of the Department of Public Works building roof and accepted an offer from Harton’s Roofing to repair the Fire Station roof at no extra charge.
DPW Director Jerry Staggs presented multiple quotes and recommended repair instead of full replacement. Jeremy Harton, owner of Harton’s Roofing, told the Council a full replacement would require bringing the roof up to new energy codes and would increase the bid by about $30,000. Staggs recommended Harton’s based on prior work; Harton’s originally installed the roof in 2001.
The Council approved a motion by Commissioner James Frohm, supported by Commissioner Joseph Davis, to hire Harton’s Roofing to repair the DPW building roof at a cost not to exceed $24,200, with a budget amendment to be taken up at next month’s meeting. Motion carried 6-0. Harton told the Council he would also repair the Fire Station roof at no extra cost.
Why it matters: timely roof repairs are intended to prevent further building damage and potentially higher replacement costs if deferred. The budget amendment will formalize funding for the DPW repair.
The DPW director will coordinate scheduling and the Clerk/Treasurer will prepare the budget amendment for the next Council meeting.
