University of Olivet to install welcome signs; council approves two campus events and road closures

The City of Olivet Council on July 8 approved The University of Olivet’s plan to install four four-foot-by-eight-foot vinyl “Welcome to Olivet” signs and granted road closures for two campus events.
Ryan Shockey, the university’s vice president and chief of staff, presented a proof for the welcome sign and said the University will pay for the signs and installation. Shockey said the sign would be designed to allow other organizations to add their name; DPW Director Jerry Staggs confirmed the placement and will verify whether the Dornbos Sign quote covered installation.
Council also approved road closures for the University’s Comet Fest on Aug. 22, 2024, around the Square (College, East and Cottage Streets from 3:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and for student Move-In Day on Aug. 13–14 (Cottage Street from Main to Church and East Street from College to Cottage starting at 7:00 a.m.). Chief Shawn Garcia raised questions about parking and safety; Gillespie said he would coordinate with Campus Safety and the bus garage. DPW will supply barricades but the event coordinators are responsible for placing and removing them.
Why it matters: the signs are city-facing branding paid for by the University, and the approved street closures will affect traffic and parking downtown during two concentrated periods in August.
The Council voted 6-0 to grant permission for the four signs and to approve both sets of road closures. The University will finalize quotes and placement details with DPW and the vendor ahead of installation and events.
