Middlefield transfer station schedules compactor repairs; staff report theft and recommend security changes

Site Manager Sean Piatek told the Durham–Middlefield Interlocal Agreement Advisory Board on June 25 that the transfer station’s compactor box requires substantial floor and wall repairs and that the work, to be done in July, may require closing the transfer station for a day.
Piatek said materials have been ordered and that Chuck Foreman will perform the repair work. Piatek also noted he will be on vacation from July 4–11 and said the board agreed the station could close for a day if necessary.
The board was also told the office money box, a jar of pennies and a phone charger were stolen during a Friday night/Saturday morning interval; the total loss was about $400. Because Piatek had locked the money box in a closet and the door was later found locked behind the thief, staff "felt it was an inside job," he said. Police are investigating. The board agreed that going forward no money will be left onsite and Piatek suggested installing cameras to deter theft.
Piatek reported other operational updates: the grinder finished the town’s brush work after assignments in Guilford and at Strickland Farm, they have not yet trained another grinder operator, a new truck has been outfitted and returned to service, and fiber has been installed at both site locations.
The board discussed whether to file an insurance claim once total truck costs are known. No final decision on the compactor closure date or camera installation was made at the meeting.
