Seaside Heights swears in lieutenant and promotes two police sergeants; one council member abstains

Lawrence Mayberry was sworn in as a police lieutenant and the Seaside Heights Borough Council approved promotions for two police officers at its April 1 meeting.
The ceremony to swear in Lawrence Mayberry took place during the regular meeting; Mayor Vaz administered the oath. The council then voted on separate resolutions to promote Joseph Funicelli (Resolution No. 26-129) and James Boyd (Resolution No. 26-130) to the rank of police sergeant.
Resolution 26-129 promoting Joseph Funicelli passed after a motion by Council Member Vito Ferrone and a second by Council Member Rich Tompkins. The vote was recorded as Ferrone, Tompkins, Bob Triano, Harry Smith and Penny Graichen voting in favor; Michael Carbone was recorded as abstaining.
Resolution 26-130 promoting James Boyd passed after a motion by Council Member Harry Smith and a second by Council Member Rich Tompkins. The tally was Ferrone, Tompkins, Triano, Smith and Graichen in favor, with Carbone abstaining.
The council had earlier met in executive session to discuss police sergeant vacancies, a personnel matter noted in Resolution No. 26-119. After the promotions and swearing-in, Mayor Vaz and the council publicly congratulated the newly promoted sergeants.
No public comments were recorded opposing the promotions. The council adjourned the meeting at 5:43 p.m.
