Board weighs declining lower-grade enrollment and a stronger district communications plan
Summary
The board reviewed an enrollment dip in lower grades (elementary down from 445 to 420 as of June 1) tied in part to a kindergarten-age cutoff change; members urged publishing current, auditable statistics and FAQs on the board website to counter misinformation and support any future building proposals.

Board members reviewed the district's enrollment report showing a decline in lower grades — the elementary count fell from 445 to 420 as of June 1 — and discussed causes and messaging.
The superintendent and board noted a recent statewide change to the kindergarten eligibility date (moved from December to September) as a factor expected to depress kindergarten entry in this cohort and thereby reduce first-grade counts this year. Members said that while graduation and postsecondary outcomes remain strong, misleading numbers circulating online (for example, third-party sites or stale data) frustrate residents and may affect sentiment about district planning and facilities.
Communication fixes proposed: Members asked for a clearly labeled board-of-education web page with current enrollment statistics, graduation outcomes and a FAQ that addresses common points (regionalization, class sizes, teacher-to-student ratios, and building plans). Donovan Group and other consultants were suggested as resources for messaging and FAQ development.
Why it matters: Accurate, timely public data can shape community support for facilities projects and reduce confusion about the district’s trajectory. Board members emphasized that right-sizing schools can save money and that improved messaging could help counter online misinformation.
Next steps: Staff and consultants will explore publishing an enrollment/metrics page and FAQs over the summer; the ad hoc renovation committee's reestablishment in August was cited as an opportunity to roll out coordinated messaging.
