Florence approves part-time police hire, training, budget amendment and business signage

At its Aug. 5 meeting the Florence Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a set of administrative and personnel actions, including a hiring decision made in executive session.
Following an executive session called to consider a Police Department personnel matter, the board — on recommendation of Chief Burns — voted unanimously to hire Hayden Lukens as a part-time police officer at $20 per hour, with a start date of Aug. 11, 2025, pending successful background and drug/alcohol testing.
Minutes record several routine approvals: sending Tac-Officer Dee McCrory to communications training Aug. 20–21 (city to pay a $300 registration fee and allowable costs); authorizing attendance at the Small-Town Conference in Philadelphia, MS (registration $125 per attendee) for governing authorities and the deputy city clerk; approval of Budget Amendment #2 for fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025; and approval of a $239 'Good Luck Eagles' ad in the Rankin County News.
The board also approved signage for Rankin Rowdies (owner Sunny Duhnna) at 15 Jackson Circle, as submitted by Chris Davis Lighting Company, Inc., and an exterior update for Eagle Car Wash at 106 Crosspark Blvd. as submitted by Munn Signs. The claims docket was approved and the July 15, 2025 minutes were approved with Alderman Brian Grantham recorded as abstaining on the minutes vote.
The hiring vote and executive-session actions were recorded in the minutes; background-check and testing contingencies were specified for the new hire.
