Florence board authorizes Phase III sewer contract, emergency pump-station repair and valve purchase

The Florence Mayor and Board on July 1 authorized key actions on the city’s sanitary sewer system and approved emergency repairs to avoid potential raw sewage release.
Mayor Trey Gunn and City Engineer Tim Parker recommended moving forward with multiple pieces of the Hwy. 49 Eagle Post Road sanitary sewer work. The board voted to authorize Mayor Gunn to execute a contract with Thornton Construction Company, Inc. for the Phase III sanitary sewer additions project contingent on city attorney review and approval of contract documents. The motion carried with Aldermen John Banks, Brian Grantham, Kyle Martin and Brent Sistrunk voting aye; Alderman Mason Herrin did not participate.
The board also approved Pay Request #7 to Hemphill Construction Company, Inc. for Phase II in the amount of $12,900.20. The vote was recorded with Banks, Grantham, Martin and Sistrunk voting aye and Herrin not participating.
Separately, the board declared and funded an emergency repair to the Florence Dogwood Hills Pump Station, approving payment of $24,107.93 (invoice M25017-C-01-Final) to Maintenance Systems, Inc. City documents say the repair was declared an emergency to protect the community from the possibility of raw sewage leakage; the motion carried unanimously.
On a recommendation from City Engineer Tim Parker, the board approved purchasing a 4" Inserta Valve (Hydra Stop) from Eagle Pipe and Supply for $6,792.00, the lowest of two quotes received. That motion also carried unanimously.
Taken together, the votes advance planned sewer construction while addressing an urgent repair deemed necessary to protect public health. The Phase III contract remains subject to review by the city attorney before execution.
