Florence board removes 'full-time' wording from July motion about mayor's position

The Florence Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Aug. 5 voted to amend a July 1 motion by removing the words "full-time position" as applied to the office of mayor.
The amendment was introduced on the recommendation of City Attorney Bobby Lingold and moved by Alderman John Banks, who cited reviews of Mississippi Attorney General opinions indicating that state law does not designate the office of mayor as either full-time or part-time. Alderman Mason Herrin seconded the motion. The board recorded unanimous support from the five aldermen present.
The board's action removed the phrase from the earlier motion but did not alter any aspects of the prior vote that set the mayor's salary. City minutes state that remaining items tied to the July 1 motion, including compensation, "remain unaffected."
