Hackberry district reports academic gains, plans September budget revision and pursues $9,000 kitchen fire grant

Superintendent and Principal Christina Ramirez told the Hackberry Elementary School District #3 governing board on Aug. 12 that the school’s academic performance has improved since last year, with ELA and math gains moving the school from a letter grade of C to a preliminary B.
Ramirez credited staff consistency and described operational priorities for the year, including leadership goals for the superintendent and business manager and new tools for parent and student communication. She listed planned supports such as a schoolwide intervention time and five field trips scheduled for the school year.
Business Manager Sam Dell reviewed the June financial report and noted the student activities account had a beginning balance of $3,728.06 and no activity in June. Dell clarified that county tax collections for students who attend KUSD are collected and distributed directly to KUSD, not through the district. He also reported the district owns a single 10-acre parcel with clear boundaries and said a revised FY26 budget that reflects recent legislative funding changes and new revenue sources will be presented at the board’s September meeting with a detailed change log for transparency.
On facilities and safety, the board discussed an application for a $9,000 SFD Kitchen Fire System grant to replace the school kitchen’s fire system; Sam Dell said he would return with additional information when available. Separately, the board approved SFD preventive maintenance reporting for FY23 and FY24 to preserve grant eligibility.
What’s next: The board scheduled a follow-up meeting Sept. 9, 2025, where the revised FY26 budget and any grant follow-up details are expected to be discussed.
