The Troy City Council finance committee voted on Jan. 23 to designate Project Road/Project Street between Campbell Avenue and Madison Avenue as the honorary "Learning Way" following a naming project led by students at Carol Hill School.
Councilmembers acknowledged the student-led classroom project and election and debated whether the broader community should also weigh in on an official name change. Councilmember McLaren asked that the planning board be involved; councilmembers then approved an amendment to the resolution that refers the proposed official renaming to the planning board for a required public hearing under Chapter 72 of the city code. Councilmembers emphasized that the current action is an honorary designation and that any final, official name change will follow the planning-board process and further public input.
Councilmembers praised the engagement of students and described the rename as both an educational exercise and a potential long-term change that will require typical municipal review procedures. The amended resolution passed unanimously.
