Several Krotz Springs residents used the public-comment portion of the Sept. 10 meeting to raise local infrastructure and emergency-preparedness concerns.
Howard Wiltz asked the board to replace or repair all seven flush outs on the North Water System and asked the board to determine who should bear the cost of those repairs; the meeting record does not specify whether the town or property owners would pay.
Councilman Larry Martinez told the board the town has used 20 loads of dirt and estimated it needs about 40 additional loads to complete needed work, at roughly $200 per load, and he said ditches need cleaning to address drainage.
Pastor Henry Wallace asked whether the Community Center could serve as a hurricane shelter. Mayor Carroll Snyder said the town could possibly use the center during a hurricane but that it is not a certified shelter; Mayor Snyder noted St. Landry Parish opened the Yambilee Building in Opelousas as an official shelter.
Louis Polotzola asked the board to inspect a culvert near Fran Wiltz’s house. Clark Saucier asked why his utilities had been cut off; Mayor Snyder said the cutoffs were for nonpayment of a previous bill.
Mayor Snyder also reported that grass letters have been sent to property owners and that the parish is expected to be in town within the next couple of weeks to demolish a house on Front Street and Todd Avenue.
The minutes record the concerns and requests but do not record decisions assigning responsibility for the water-system flush outs, a schedule for ditch-cleaning work, or a firm plan for shelter coordination with parish emergency services.
